Studio; Critical Butter Knife Workshop

Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting a whittling workshop with Nick from Studio; Critical. Working with nothing more than a sloyd knife and a piece of sycamore, we began exploring traditional crafts and self-expression, allowing us to slow down and tap into our creative potential.

Nick encouraged us to embrace the organic nature of the wood, allowing it to guide our hands and spark our imagination. Each of us choosing a small piece of sycamore, a versatile and beautiful wood known for its fine grain and smooth texture.

We learned essential whittling techniques. Starting with the basics, he showed us how to hold the sloyd knife and make controlled cuts, emphasizing safety and precision. We practiced making shallow and deep cuts, creating different shapes and textures. As we gained confidence, Nick introduced us to more advanced techniques, including shaping curves and adding intricate details.

Afterwards we enjoyed a selection of cheeses, bread and butter using our newly crafted Knives for the first time.
